Back-to-school season brings a lot of change, and much of that starts well before students walk through our doors.
Over the past several weeks, our staff and leadership teams have spent a great deal of time preparing, training and working together for the year ahead. We are also adjusting to new systems and tools designed to make information easier to find, improve accessibility and create more consistent ways for families and community members to connect with us.
We know change takes time. We will not get everything perfect right away. We will keep listening, learning, and improving.
Our learning this summer has gone beyond systems and technology. As our district leadership team explored The Courage Advantage presented by Steve Fredlund, one message especially stayed with me: growth does not always feel comfortable. New beginnings can be exciting, but they can also bring uncertainty. Moving forward often asks us to learn, adapt and trust the people around us.
I am feeling that in a very personal way this year. Our fourth child is heading to kindergarten, which means we will have one child in high school, one in middle school and two in elementary school. I am excited for the challenges, discoveries, friendships and opportunities ahead for her. I am also incredibly grateful for the educators and staff who will walk alongside her, just as they do for thousands of students every day.
Every family experiences this season a little differently. For some, it is a first day of kindergarten. For others, it may be the start of a senior year or watching someone leave home for college, the military, the workforce or a new community. These moments can hold excitement, pride and possibility alongside a little uncertainty about what comes next.
That is part of growth.
And none of us moves through those new beginnings entirely on our own. Throughout our community, families, volunteers, and local organizations continue to support our learners and schools in meaningful ways. This time of year, that includes partners who generously support our Back-to-School Kickoff and our Here to Help efforts, ensuring students who need backpacks, school supplies, and other essentials are ready to begin the year with what they need.
Those acts of support are a powerful reminder of what is possible when a community invests in its schools, its educators and, most importantly, its learners.
Sometimes growth is learning a new system or finding a better way to do something. Sometimes it is walking into kindergarten for the first time. Sometimes it is watching someone you love take a much bigger step into their next chapter.
Each new beginning asks something a little different of us. It may take courage, patience, flexibility or a willingness to try again. And often, it helps us discover something we could not see from where we started.
As we begin this school year, I am grateful for the people beside us and excited for all that lies ahead. There is so much possibility in a new beginning — and even more when we move forward together!
