The Power of Family Involvement in Student Success

In Cambridge-Isanti Schools, we hold a simple yet profound belief: educating our youth is a shared responsibility. Our mission, to educate, empower, and inspire every student, every day to achieve their full potential, requires a partnership with families. This summer, a thoughtful group of families and staff has come together to explore how we can deepen our collaboration. The reason is clear: when families are involved in their child's learning, students excel in school and beyond.

The role of families in education cannot be overstated. Research consistently shows that students with engaged parents and caregivers have better school attendance, develop more resilient social and emotional skills, and earn better grades. But beyond the statistics, there’s something more profound at play. Family involvement creates a support system that extends the reach of the classroom, ensuring that learning is a continuous process, both in school and at home.

In Cambridge-Isanti Schools, we understand that every family is different, and the ways in which we all support a child's education will vary. That’s why we focus on fostering partnerships that are flexible, inclusive, and rooted in mutual respect. We want to welcome every family member, whether as a volunteer in our schools or as an active partner at home. To make this partnership easy and accessible, we encourage families to take four simple yet impactful steps:

1. Show an interest in and support for learning. Education is more than just attending school—it’s the key that opens doors to future opportunities. When families show interest in what their children are learning, it sends a powerful message that education matters. Ask about their day, discuss their interests, and celebrate their successes, no matter how small. This interest not only motivates children but also helps them see the value in their own education.

2. Read with or to your child daily. Reading is foundational to all learning, and like any skill, it requires regular practice. Just 15 minutes of reading a day can dramatically improve a child’s reading fluency and confidence. It’s an investment of time that pays lifelong dividends. Whether it’s a bedtime story for younger children or discussing a chapter of a book with teens, reading together fosters a love for learning and strengthens the bond between parent and child.

3. Contact us at the first sign of a problem or concern. In Cambridge-Isanti Schools, we pride ourselves on having a team of experts in child and teen development. We are here to support families, not just in academic matters but in any area where a child might be struggling. Whether it’s homework help, social isolation, or behavioral concerns, we encourage families to reach out to their child’s teacher, school’s office, counselor, or nurse. We believe that early intervention can make a world of difference, and we are committed to working with families to find solutions that work for their child. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We want every child or teen in our schools to have at least one trusted adult they can turn to—a person who knows them, understands their needs, and supports their growth. If you ever feel that your child is lonely, isolated, or struggling, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to help, and we are stronger when we work together.

4. Volunteer in our schools. We Need You! Each volunteer contributes to the success of our learners and our staff. Volunteering is a powerful way to be directly involved in your child’s educational experience and to contribute to the broader school community. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. These include taking home projects, assisting in the classroom, chaperoning field trips, helping out at school events and activity nights, and much more. Volunteering allows you to witness the learning process firsthand and to support our dedicated teachers and staff in creating an enriching environment for all students. Please get to know our Volunteer Coordinators at each school and watch for more information about how you can get involved. We greatly appreciate our volunteers and are looking forward to seeing you soon!

Our commitment to partnership extends beyond the school. We invite those who are in a position to help others to join us as volunteers. Our schools thrive when the community comes together to support our children, and there are countless ways to get involved. Whether you can donate your time, resources, or expertise, your contribution makes a difference. To explore opportunities to volunteer or donate, please visit our website at c-ischools.org/volunteer. Every act of kindness and support, no matter how small, strengthens our community and helps create a nurturing environment for our students.

Cambridge-Isanti Schools is more than just a place of learning; it’s a community where people care for one another, where compassion and collaboration are at the core of our identity. As we embark on a new school year, let’s renew our commitment to working together on behalf of our children. By joining forces, we can ensure that every student not only meets their potential but exceeds it. Together, let’s make this a great year—one filled with learning, growth, and success for all.

Our children’s future depends on the strength of our partnerships today. Let’s continue to work hand in hand to build a bright, promising future for every student in Cambridge-Isanti Schools.
