Precious Moments in a Busy Season

Each year as December arrives, our calendars seem to fill faster than the snowflakes fall. Concerts, games, gatherings, shopping lists, school events, and the daily routines of life all begin to stack on top of one another. It is a season filled with anticipation and excitement—but also, at times, with pressure, worry, or loneliness. Amid the rush, it becomes easy to move from one task to the next without ever pausing long enough to truly experience the moments happening right in front of us.

Recently, I have been thinking a great deal about how quickly time moves. In schools, we often measure the year by milestones—new beginnings in September, the joy and energy of fall activities, winter concerts, spring transitions, and the proud celebrations of graduation. But in between those big markers are thousands of small, fleeting moments: a child’s smile as they master something difficult, a teacher offering encouragement at just the right time, students helping one another, the simple joy of being part of a community. These are the moments that give our work meaning. They are also the moments that are easiest to miss when life becomes busy.

This time of year invites each of us to pause—however briefly—and notice the things we might otherwise overlook. Maybe it’s a quiet morning before the day begins, a few minutes of conversation with a child or friend, the laughter that fills a kitchen, or the pride of watching students perform on stage. These moments may seem small, but they are often the ones we remember long after the season has passed.

I also recognize that the holidays are not easy for everyone. For many, this season carries reminders of loss, financial strain, or complicated family circumstances. Others simply feel the weight of expectations and the pressure to make everything “perfect.” If this describes you, please know you are not alone. Our school community is full of caring people—teachers, staff, neighbors, and friends—who support one another through both celebration and challenge. My encouragement is not to chase perfection, but to embrace what is good, even if it is small. Sometimes the most precious moment of all is giving ourselves permission to breathe.

As we move into the final weeks of 2025, I hope each of us can find space to slow down, to listen, to laugh, and to connect. Look for the moments that bring joy, comfort, and meaning. Hold onto them. Share them. And when you see someone who may be carrying more than they show, offer kindness—an encouraging word, a simple check-in, or a reminder that they matter.

This season, I will be working to do the same. I will try to be more present with my family, more attentive in my conversations, and more grateful for the small things that make our community special. My hope is that we all finish the year not only having accomplished much, but having noticed much—especially the precious moments that make this season meaningful.

Wishing you peace, connection, and joy in the weeks ahead.
GO BIG BLUE!
