Our Character Traits: A Timeless North Star for Our Schools and Community

January invites reflection—on where we’ve been, where we’re going, and the values that guide us along the way. At Cambridge-Isanti Schools, those guiding values are found in our district character traits, which continue to serve as a steady and trusted North Star.

More than twenty years ago, a group of committed community members came together as a task force to thoughtfully define the values they believed should anchor our schools. Under the leadership of former Director of Teaching and Learning Chris Miller, this group asked an important question: What principles should guide how we teach, lead, and care for one another—no matter what the future holds? One of our current School Board members, Mark Solberg, served on that task force, helping shape work that remains deeply relevant today.

The result was the adoption of five core character traits: Respect, Responsibility, Self-Discipline, Honesty, and Compassion.

Time has proven the wisdom of that work.

These traits are far more than a list of ideals. They guide how we operate as a public school system that is, at its core, in the people business. Our mission to educate, empower, and inspire every student, every day requires us to work with people through a wide range of experiences—moments of celebration and pride, as well as moments marked by uncertainty, strong emotions, and differing perspectives.

In those moments, our character traits matter most.

  • Respect guides how we treat one another and how we engage in conversation—even when viewpoints differ.
  • Responsibility reminds us to act with purpose, to consider our impact on others, and to keep students at the center of every decision.
  • Self-Discipline helps us slow down, think critically, and respond with intention rather than impulse.
  • Honesty anchors our work in trust, transparency, and integrity.
  • Compassion calls us to recognize the humanity in one another and to lead with care and empathy.

Like any community, we are not immune to moments of tension, uncertainty, or strong disagreement. When emotions run high and perspectives differ, living our values becomes more challenging—and more important. In these moments, our character traits provide both grounding and guidance. They help us balance care with clarity, empathy with accuracy, and listening with leadership.

Guided by these principles, we remain committed to clear communication, factual information, and transparency. Honesty and responsibility call us to share information openly, while respect and compassion shape how we listen and respond. Together, these traits guide how we listen, collaborate, problem-solve, and seek common ground—especially when issues are complex.

This is part of what makes our schools, and our community, special. Our character traits are explicitly taught to students, modeled by staff, and reinforced through countless interactions that often go unnoticed but make a lasting difference. They prepare students not only for academic success, but for life: as neighbors, citizens, leaders, and contributors to a diverse and ever-changing world.

As we move forward into the new year, I am grateful for the foresight of those community members who established this foundation more than two decades ago. My hope is that we continue to lean into Respect, Responsibility, Self-Discipline, Honesty, and Compassion—not just as words, but as actions. When we do, our schools reflect the very best of our community and the values we strive to pass on to every student.
