Literacy, Learning, and Our Community’s Future

February is “I Love to Read Month,” and in Cambridge-Isanti Schools, it is a meaningful time to celebrate one of the most essential skills we help students develop—reading. Literacy is foundational to all learning. It opens doors to new ideas, builds confidence, and gives students the tools they need to think critically and communicate effectively throughout their lives. This month also provides an opportunity to reflect on how our students are growing and how our collective commitment to literacy is making a difference.

Recent winter learning data shows encouraging progress across our district. Between fall and winter, nearly 70% of all second-grade students met or exceeded their expected growth in reading. These early years are critical, and this progress reflects strong foundational instruction that supports long-term success.

At the secondary level, students continue to demonstrate solid performance as literacy skills deepen and expand. More than 61% of sixth-grade students and nearly 60% of eighth-grade students scored above winter grade-level benchmarks. Together, these results reinforce the importance of sustained attention to literacy development at every grade level.

These outcomes are worth celebrating, and they are not accidental. They reflect the daily work of highly skilled educators who are expert practitioners and masters of teaching and learning. Across the district, teachers collaborate, use data thoughtfully, and continually refine instruction to meet the needs of every learner. This intentional, student-centered approach is what drives meaningful growth.

Just as important, this work is grounded in trust. Cambridge-Isanti Schools is committed to being a reliable, transparent source of information for our families and community. Sharing student learning data helps us celebrate progress, identify areas for continued growth, and remain focused on continuous improvement—always with students at the center.

This is also a powerful reminder of the value and promise of public education. Our schools bring together expert educators, engaged families, and supportive community partners to create learning environments where students are challenged, supported, and inspired. Through this work, students develop not only strong academic skills, but also the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and contribute meaningfully to the world around them. These foundational skills build over time—supporting success in high school and opening doors to college, career, military service, and meaningful civic life beyond graduation. They are the foundations of well-educated, informed citizens—the next generation of leaders, problem solvers, neighbors, and community members who will help shape the future of our community.

As we recognize I Love to Read Month, we reflect on more than reading. We honor the educators who make learning come alive every day, the students who show up ready to grow, and the shared commitment between schools, families, and our community that strengthens public education for all.

GO BIG BLUE.
