The Power of Art and Music in Education

Inspiring Creativity, Confidence, and Community

At our schools, we understand that art and music are not just extracurricular activities—they are integral to a well-rounded education. These disciplines do more than spark creativity—they help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that benefit them in all areas of life. By integrating the arts into our curriculum, we nurture creativity, self-expression, and academic excellence.

To better understand the value of art and music in education, we reached out to our dedicated teachers and principals for their thoughts. Here's what they had to say about why these subjects are essential to our students' growth and success.

The Importance of Art and Music in Education

Engaging in the arts does more than just inspire creativity—it fosters cognitive development and boosts academic performance. Music and visual arts stimulate both sides of the brain, which enhances skills in math, language, and spatial awareness. As Mrs. Wressell, our Cambridge Intermediate School Music Teacher, explains, "Music activates both sides of the brain, reinforcing mathematical and linguistic abilities through pattern recognition and spatial awareness."

But the impact goes beyond academics. Art and music encourage students to express their emotions, explore history, and connect with the world around them. Mrs. Larson, our Cambridge Intermediate School Art Teacher, highlights how art builds deeper connections across subjects: "Art helps us work through emotions, promotes creativity, and builds a deeper understanding of the world, linking history, literature, math, and science."

Our teachers agree that the arts are vital for overall student success, both in school and in life. As Isanti Middle School Principal Randy Pauly shares, "Art and music are not just electives—they are vital to student growth and success. Research shows that students involved in the arts perform better academically and develop lifelong skills that enhance their personal and professional lives."

Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Arts Environment

One of the things that makes our schools' art and music programs so special is how we ensure every student feels included and supported, no matter their skill level. As Mrs. Wressell notes, "I create parts for most of the songs in my music program to appeal to all types of students—those who read music, those who play instruments, and even those who contribute through choreography or sign language."

Mrs. Larson also emphasizes her approach to helping every student succeed, saying, "My job is to help students achieve the skills they need by providing options within projects and offering one-on-one help, whether it's drawing or shading with colored pencils."

At Isanti Middle School, Principal Randy Pauly echoes these sentiments, explaining, "We celebrate effort and creativity over perfection, encouraging students to explore and take risks. Differentiated instruction allows students to develop skills at their own pace, helping both beginners and advanced learners thrive."

Whether it's through collaborative activities, varied projects, or individualized support, we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment where every student feels valued and empowered.

What Sets Our Schools' Arts Programs Apart?

Our art and music programs stand out for their diversity, creativity, and hands-on learning. Mrs. Wressell describes the collaboration between our staff, saying, "We all work together to support each other and our areas of expertise. The music faculty collaborates to make sure we have the resources and materials we need to provide a top-notch program."

Our students also have access to a wide range of materials and techniques. Mrs. Larson explains, "Our students are given the opportunity to utilize materials such as weaving, clay, and printmaking—resources they might not find at other schools."

Additionally, our schools offer exciting experiences that go beyond the classroom. From school-wide singalongs to trips to the Minnesota Orchestra and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, students experience the magic of music and art in real-world settings.

Strengthening Community Through the Arts

Art shows and performances bring our school communities together, fostering a sense of pride and unity. Mrs. Wressell points out, "For my concerts, I use many parent volunteers to help with logistics, and that gives them a chance to see firsthand what goes on during the school day. It helps connect families with the school and with me."

At Isanti Middle School, Principal Randy Pauly explains that these events also help students develop teamwork, confidence, and leadership skills. "School-wide events like performances and art shows bring students, families, and staff together, creating a strong sense of community and pride. By involving families and the broader community, they reinforce the value of the arts in education."

As the Isanti Intermediate & C-I STEAM School team notes, these events do more than just showcase talent—they help students grow emotionally and socially. "Art shows and performances create a social atmosphere, bringing people together, and the art itself helps us grow, learn compassion, empathy, and understanding."

Success Stories: The Lasting Impact of the Arts

The arts have a profound impact on our students, inspiring confidence, perseverance, and self-expression. Mrs. Wressell shares, "I’ve had students, especially those in special education, shine by singing a solo or playing an instrument in concerts. It’s amazing to watch them develop these skills, especially since they may struggle in other academic areas."

Mrs. Larson adds, "Many students express that art is their favorite subject because it gives them the chance to express themselves. For visual and hands-on learners, art opens doors to a deeper level of understanding and expression."

At Isanti Intermediate & C-I STEAM School, the impact is equally powerful. "One student who struggled with reading volunteered to speak at a concert. They worked incredibly hard to practice their lines, and by the end, they were glowing with confidence. It was amazing to see how the arts helped this student overcome personal challenges."

At our schools, we recognize that art and music are more than just subjects—they are vital to shaping well-rounded, creative, and confident individuals.
