Early Childhood Screening

In this section
The early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth.  Early Childhood Screening (ECS) is a quick and simple check of how children are doing at age 3 or 4 years old.  It identifies, at an early stage, possible learning or health concerns so that children can get needed help before starting school.  Early Childhood Screening is required for entrance in Minnesota’s public schools and is offered throughout the year by local districts.

Screening is required by state law before a child enters kindergarten. That makes it sound as though a child should be screened right before kindergarten. NOT SO!

Screening is most valuable for three-year-olds!
Early Childhood Screening is a free check of:
· Height and Weight
· Vision and Hearing
· Immunization Records
· Speech/Language Assessment
· Developmental Assessment

Scoring is based on the child’s age at the time of screening, so being older does not give children any advantage. Screening is free, and is offered during the school year.
